The doctor Marcelo Antônio Cartaxo Queiroga Lopes was announced by President Jair Bolsonaro this Monday (3/15) as the new Minister of Health after the departure of General Eduardo Pazuello. Queiroga is the fourth minister to take over the portfolio during Bolsonaro's administration.

Queiroga has been a doctor for over 30 years, graduated the Federal University of Paraíba.

"The conversation was excellent, I had known him for a few years. He is not a person I learned a few days ago. And he has everything in my opinion to do a good job, continuing everything that Pazuello has done until today", said president when announcing the change on an official YouTube channel.

President of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, Marcelo Queiroga comes to the position with the challenge of heading the portfolio at the worst moment of the pandemic in the country and with a strong pressure for the mass vaccination of the population.

Bolsonaro also promised, without explaining details, that the new minister will be responsible for a broad vaccination program. "With regard to vaccines, a very bold program, more than 400 million doses contracted by the end of the year. This month we will receive more than 4 million vaccines, and this policy of mass vaccination will continue to be increasingly present in our government. . "

Marcelo Queiroga had already shown himself to have a good influence in the government even before he was announced as minister. He pleases not only Bolsonaro but also the president's militancy on social media, even defending social isolation.

"We want to reinforce how fundamental it is for the general population to follow social isolation, to avoid contagion, and to take all the precautions indicated," said Marcelo Queiroga in a text published on the website of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology.

With a technical profile, Queiroga was part of the government's transition team in the health field and was appointed by Bolsonaro to take a position in the direction of the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS).

He, however, made it clear in an interview with the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper this Sunday (3/14) that he is not an advocate of bolsonarista flags, such as the use of chloroquine.

"The Brazilian Society of Cardiology itself did not recommend the use of it in patients (...) Nor am I favorable because there is no consensus in the scientific community," said Queiroga in an interview with the newspaper.

Queiroga was announced as minister after meeting Bolsonaro in Brasília on Monday. The president had already received Dr. Ludhmila Hajjar, who said he had not accepted the position.

Today, Brazil is the global leader in the number of daily deaths in absolute numbers and several capitals in the country have most hospitals fully filled. If the size of the population is considered, the country ranks 12th among the hardest hit, with 132 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to a survey by Johns Hopkins University (USA).

Graduated in medicine the Federal University of Paraíba, Queiroga has more than 30 years of experience as a doctor. Today, he is pursuing a doctorate in Bioethics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, in Portugal. He is also director of the Department of Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology (Cardiocenter) at Hospital Alberto Urquiza Wanderley, in João Pessoa, Paraíba.

First drug without tests on animals goes for approval in the USA

Finally a remedy created without testing on animals! The drug, created to assist in the treatment of cancer, was developed by researchers Israel and arrived in the United States to be approved by the FDA, the American Anvisa.

Instead of using animals, the test method relied on a human organ simulation chip, capable of accelerating the pace of new drug development. The results in the scientific journal Science Translational Medicine.

"As far as we know, this is the first time that a drug is taking this step without animal testing, and the reason is that we have eliminated that need using our" human on a chip "technology," said Professor Yaakov Nahmias, lead author of the study, in an interview with the Times of Israel newspaper.

More than that: the new type of test is also faster and cheaper.

“Getting a drug to the point of clinical testing usually takes four to six years, hundreds of animals and costs millions of dollars. We did this in eight months, without a single animal and for a fraction of the cost, ”said the scientist.

Researchers at Hebrew University of Jerusalem believe that it will be possible to obtain registration for the use of the drug without the need to involve animals in scientific trials.

"This is the first demonstration that we can use this technology to bypass animal experiments, and it could lead to the development of faster, safer and more effective drugs," said Yaakov Nahmias.

If approved, the drug could pave the way for drug drug testing in animals to be left behind, which is now a necessity in the approval of this type of product.

The method used in the tests, without involving animals, can also accelerate the development of new drugs, which would be good news in times of a pandemic.
